Journal Entry #6 Q2
Describe a situation in your book in which one of the following is taking place:
1) someone is stuck in a situation that s/he didn’t create OR
2) someone believes in something strongly despite opposition or difficulty.
THEN explain what needs to be done, and by whom, to relieve this character’s stress. Why? Explain. Be clear in your description and make these TWO parts (problem and solution) work smoothly as one focused writing. Adapt the PROBLEM / SOLUTION aspect of this journal as necessary to your book.

Throughout Hemingway's life his goal was to support himself and his family through his writings. Although he was incredibly talented, he did struggle to gain prominence in his writing. In the start of his career he also had to deal with great amounts of poverty, due to his struggles with writing. Hemingway had his share of failures with writing, but he kept on writing no matter what anyone said. His career in writing also posed a problem to himself economically. Since he was not as successful at the start of his writing career, it was difficult for Hemingway to make ends meet. To reduce Hemingway's stress about his career it was necessary for him to keep working to gain prominence with his writing, which is exactly what he did. As soon as Hemingway's writing became more and more famous his stress about money vanished. This is an important lesson to anyone with a dream, the harder one works the more of a chance of has of his or her dream coming true.

Journal Entry #5, Q2
Apply your book's topic to Columbia High School. Explain how its topic impacts or might impact school life here. What problems or concerns do or might arise related to it? What solutions does your book suggest? or imply? Apply your book's topic broadly so that even if an historical aspect is covered, you consider the broader topic within today's CHS. Explain and support your position. (If you feel that CHS cannot be applied to your book, explain how it could.)

Columbia High School (CHS) could be applied to Hemingway's A Moveable Feast because they both convey ideas about dreams and hard work. All of the students at CHS work hard to attain their future goals similar to how Hemingway spent his days writing so that he could succeed as an author. Students at CHS are also encouraged to pursue whatever they want to pursue and similarly Hemingway chose to pursue writing even though many people told him not to.

Some problems that Hemingway faces in his memoir include poverty and staying true to himself in his writing. Though it is unlikely that a lot of the students at CHS are experiencing the same type of poverty that Hemingway experienced, some students may have experienced what it feels like to struggle to make ends meet. In addition to financial troubles some students at CHS have also struggled with trying to stay true to themselves. With so many social and academic pressures it becomes easy for students to do what everyone else does. Hemingway does pose some solutions for these issues. He tried to work as hard as possible and focus on cheap things such as free libraries and street art, to overcome or just momentarily forget about his economic circumstances. When Hemingway is told by other authors what to do about his writing he often takes it to heart, but  ultimately he is sure to do what he feels is right with his writings.

Journal Entry #4, Q2
Describe what's going on from the perspective of a more minor character or partial outsider. What would s/he observe, know, think as a result? SUPPORT. How is that different from the main character's or reader's perspective (or that of an insider)? SUPPORT. Does the truth or reality reside with one or the other, or somewhere in between, in your opinion? SUPPORT in 300-350 words.

I often drink tea with Ernest Hemingway and his wife.  They are very nice people but they spend too much time thinking about unimportant things. Hemingway's wife often spends too much money on clothing, money that should be spent on art. I think that one should only focus on the utility of clothing not the look of it, and spend money on art to furnish one's home. I also think that Hemingway should stop writing these inacrochable books. Being inacrochable is like being a painting that is good but cannot be hung up, therefore no one will buy it. Writing inacrochable works is a waste of Hemingway's time. The final thing that I have noticed is that Hemingway is a part of La Generation Perdue or The Lost Generation. The Lost Generation is the generation of men that fought in the war and that spend their time drinking all day. It is a shame that the war has ruined so many young men, causing them to drink their days away.
-Gertrude Stein
Stein's opinion differed greatly from Hemingway's opinion. Hemingway felt that it did not matter whether or not the pieces he was writing were "inacrochable" or not all that mattered was that he liked them. He was also perplexed by Stein's perspective of a lost generation, he felt that the term was too great of a generalization for it to be accurate. Not everyone that fought in the war was a drunk. I think that the truth may lie with Hemingway's perspective. I think that one's writing only needs to please oneself,  one should not worry about the marketability of his or her writing. Hemingway was not too concerned with the appeal of his writing yet his works were critically acclaimed. I think that writers should focus on what they want to write first and then think about weather or not people will buy it.

Journal Entry #3 Q2
Explain a process or perspective we could learn from your book, perhaps something other than our usual understanding. THEN—What advantage would there be in understanding this process or perspective? Explain. (Think about character thought processes, decision making processes, gov't/ large organization decision making etc. Tie in the "outside the box" thinking process mentality of "Freakonomics" with your book.)

The book Three Cups of Tea by Greg Mortenson shows Mortenson's quick decision making process. Throughout the book it is evident that Mortenson makes a lot of decisions without putting a lot of thought into the decisions that he is making. When Mortenson promises the town Korphe in Pakistan that he will build them a school, he does not think about how he will build or school or what obstacles he must overcome to build the school, he simply agrees to build it. Later when Mortenson returns to Pakistan to build the school he learns that the school needs a bridge. He returns to California feeling defeated because he must raise even more money to build the school that he had promised the people of Korphe. I think that Mortenson should think more carefully when making such important promises. But Mortenson's impulsive decision making skills did force him to build the school in Korphe, making him go through any obstacles that stood in his way. I think that it is important for people to allow their impulses to guide them, though it is also important to maintain a balance between what is practical and what one wants to do.

Journal Entry #2 Q2
What would your author say was his or her purpose in putting this book together? In other words, what message would you say this author wants to convey to his/her readers? INTRODUCE BOOK TITLE (underline if handwritten, italics if typed) AND AUTHOR as you write this. Additionally, from what you have read, how successful do you think this author is at transmitting his/her message to the reader? Explain. At the end--write what page you're on out of how many total (ex. 125/315).

Greg Mortenson's purpose in writing Three Cups of Tea was to share his story on how and why he began building schools in Pakistan. The book starts out with Mortenson unsuccessfully climbing the K2 mountain and later deciding to seek help. He finds a very poor village in the mountains that takes him in hospitably and nurses him back to help. While taking a tour of the village Mortenson discovers that their "school" is practically nonexistent and vows to build them a school. The book takes you through Mortenson's journey as he saves every drop of his money and then begins to build schools throughout Pakistan. I think Mortenson is pretty successful at transmitting his message about the need for education in the middle eastern countries. He vividly describes all of the places he goes to, characterizing each place's need for greater education. Mortenson makes it clear in his book how dedicated he is to building a school for the village in Pakistan when he describes his living conditions in Berkley, California. Mortenson slept in his car and sold all of his belongings for his flight to Pakistan. Another purpose of Mortenson's book may be to honor is late sister Christa. He makes it very clear in the book that many of the things he does with the intention of honoring his sister. His original goal of climbing K2 was to place his sister's ring on the top, and later he decided that a better tribute to his sister would be to build the school in Pakistan. It is very likely that Mortenson also wanted to honor Christa while writing this book.

EITHER write about what type of reading you've liked in the past and why you picked your nonfiction book.  Does your book fit your past reading preferences?  Explain.   OR write about what you'll be looking for in a nonfiction book and why.  Will it match or change from your past reading preferences? How did your previous selection inform your decision to read this book? What do you expect to be similar? Dissimilar? 250-300 words.

I chose the book Three Cups of Tea because I thoroughly enjoyed my last non fiction book I am Malala and wanted to read more about middle eastern countries. Both books talk about the need for education in the middle east but with very different points of view.  Three Cups of Tea is about a white male that goes mountain climbing in Pakistan and is rescued by a very poor mountain village, once he returns home he swears to build a proper school for the village, whereas I am Malala is about a young Muslim girl living in Pakistan who speaks out against the Taliban. I think that Three Cups of Tea will not give as much insight on the conditions in Pakistan as I am Malala did. Three Cups of Tea focuses more on the journey of Greg Mortenson building his charity to build schools throughout Pakistan and the middle east. In the past I have enjoyed reading non fiction books that tell a story, more specifically memoirs written in the first person. Though Three Cups of Tea is a memoir, it is not told in the first person which is different from what I am used to in non fiction books. I think that it will be interesting to read a book from the point of view of a fellow American on the issues in the middle east and Pakistan because the last book I read on the topic was narrated by someone that is living in Pakistan.

What does your selection of your book and its topic / contents say about you and other readers of it?  Hypothesize and support with sufficient specifics to be at least a well-developed paragraph.
The selection of my book Three Cups of Tea by Greg Mortenson and David Oliver Relin shows that I enjoy memoirs particularly about people that make a difference in the world. This book is about a man named Greg Mortenson who after failing to climb deadly mountain K2 was taken in by a very poor village in Pakistan where he was nursed back to health. After this Mortenson promised that he would come back and help this village, which lead to his worldwide campaign to spread education throughout that part of the world. I think that the people that would read this book like to hear about good being done in the world and hope to some day make an impact of their own. I chose this book because I thoroughly enjoyed the last book I read that had a strong basis in education in the middle east so I thought that this book would be a good choice for me to read. I think that those who would enjoy this book would like to find out more about a part of the world that they do not know too much about and how one could possibly help a part of the world that one has never been to.

My name is Thorpekai Yousafzai and I am Malala Yousafzai's mother. Words cannot describe how proud I am of my wonderful daughter, for she has accomplished so much at such a young age. She always stands up for what she believes in which I admire greatly. But every night I have nightmares about Malala not being in her room come morning, and about the Taliban finding her again and actually killing her. Though I am not as scared as I was when we lived in Swat, I can still feel the fear in the back of my mind. When I found out that Malala had been shot on her way home from school I thought that my world had ended, but I knew deep down that Allah would protect my girl. Now two years have passed and I am still a little scared for her.  When Malala was younger  I discouraged her from being so public about her views, for I was scared that the Taliban would target her. Malala would tell me that she would rather die with her voice being heard then be alive not doing anything.  But after seeing Malala's smile when she won the nobel peace prize I realized that all of the fear I had felt was worth it. She has touched so many people with her words, spreading hope throughout Pakistan, and throughout the world. Malala has taught me that it is ok to be scared, but that you must never let fear get in the way of your ambitions.

From your reading, DESCRIBE ONE important example of an event, conflict, characteristic of a major character, perception (yours as the reader of what's going on so far), passion (character), mistake (character), or success (character), etc. THEN explain what this example shows AND why it's important. Support your answer. FINALLY, list your book title AND what page you're on out of how many total. 250-300 words.

One example from I Am Malala written by Malala Yousafzai that shows Malala's generous and caring disposition is when she comes across the "children of the rubbish mountain". The "children of the rubbish mountain" are simply a  group of children that Malala saw looking through the trash for glass, bottle tops, and cans that they could sell to make a little bit of money. Malala describes the children as being very filthy, having sores covering their faces, and having matted hair. Most of the people living in Malala's community would walk past these children and would just feel sorry for them, but would not think about them too much. On the contrary, Malala could not get these children off of her mind. When she got home she begged her father to let them into his school for no charge, insisting that they must be educated. Though her father argued that the children looking through the trash were the breadwinners of each of their families, Malala still insisted that all children should be given an education. As a result, her father, with the help of a wealthy philanthropist produced thousands of leaflets that promoted education for children, which were spread all over the town. This event is significant because it shows how passionate Malala is about education and how caring she is about others. Throughout the book her generosity and passion only increases as she hears more and more about children and women not being able to get an education. Recently Malala's passion of education and her  kindness have made her the youngest recipient of the Noble Peace Prize.

10/6/14 Malala Yousafzai's purpose for writing her book I Am Malala was to spread awareness for girls education in Pakistan and in other countries in the Middle East. Malala's father is a huge advocate for the education of women, which greatly influenced how Malala was brought up. As a child she valued education and wrote about how she treasured education even more after the Taliban banned girls from going to school. She began speaking out for education when she was around 12, through anonymous journal entries about her experiences with the Taliban, that she wrote for the BBC Urdu website. In these entries she described her fears of not being allowed to get educated because she was a woman. In a couple of more years she became even more active in advocating for women's education, traveling throughout Pakistan to give speeches on women rights. I think that Malala does an excellent job at spreading awareness for girls education because she describes her first hand experiences with these issues. She shares what it was like to leave all of her school supplies behind when she had to leave her home town because there was too much unrest, and how it felt to hear about other schools for girls being bombed by the Taliban. Most people who read I am Malala do not have any experiences even close to the ones that Malala has had, and some do not even know how serious the lack of women's rights and education is in this part of the world. But if one were to read this book they would see how serious these issues really are.

There are several debatable topics mentioned in I am Malala. The first topic being whether the United States did more harm than good for the country of Pakistan when fighting in Afghanistan, the next topic being whether or not religion should impact the government, and the final topic being whether or not Pakistan submitting to western ways would be a good idea. The most prominent issue in the book being the influence of Islam in the government, it is the most relevant issue because it greatly impacted women's rights in Pakistan which is what this book focuses on. Int he book it talks about how when the Taliban took over Pakistan, they interpreted the Koran to support their beliefs that women should not be educated, and should stay out of the public sphere. The Mullah Radio station would specifically congratulate girls who stopped going to school, saying that they would now go to heaven. Malala brings up an interesting point that the Taliban encouraged women who raided anti Taliban establishments, "When it suits the Taliban, women can be vocal and visible."(127) The Taliban did not actually think that women having a part in society would lead to their damnation, but only used Islam and the Koran to scare women into dropping out of school. This influence of religion on the government made it a lot easier for the Taliban to take control of Pakistan, they scare the people of the country into following them by using threats based on salvation. In the United States religion and government was made separate to allow religious tolerance for everyone, but in countries like Pakistan where the people are predominantly one religion it would also make sense for the country to have a secular government to avoid having leaders that abuse the powers of religion in order to gain power.

In terms of non fiction books, in the past I have  enjoyed narratives. In particular, I have enjoyed  narratives that help me to imagine someone's life that is completely different from my own. The last non fiction book that I read was
essentially a collection of stories about women throughout the world and the struggles that they have to go through in order to survive. I thoroughly enjoyed that book and wanted to read more on the topic, I thought the book  I am Malala which is a narrative about a girl who was around my age when she was shot by the Taliban in 2012, would be a good choice. I chose this book because I thought it would be  interesting to read a book told by someone closer to my age. I am also interested in knowing what it would be like to go through such a traumatic experience, and how one would come back from something like that. I think that this book does fit my past reading preferences because as I said earlier, I prefer to read narratives. Though this book does contain a little more history than a book that I would usually chose to read, I think it will give the book more background, and teach me about a part of the world that I do not know much about.
